In this short scene, the two young lovers meet in the underground district of Covent Garden. They are introduced to each other as "Miss sharle" and "Captain bernhart," respectively. Miss sharle tells the lovers that she is a close friend of the family and that she would like to meet them. She asks them to touch her on their feet. She tells them that they are "very import ant" and asks them if they are feeling "a bit more relaxed" now that they have met her. She says that she apologizes for using her name, but that she never heard any rumors about her fiance. She adds that she feels as though she "saw right through" her story that he is in love with her and that he should be friends with her
