The novel opens with a soliloquy in which the narrator laments the fact that he is not allowed to attend the theater party at the palace. He wishes that he could see the prince and the queen together. He also laments that the king and queen are so close that he cannot think of anyone else. The narrator wishes that the prince would spend the night with the queen so that he and the princess could have the chance to be together forever.
