In this short scene, we learn that Claudius and Marcio are both in Vienna, and that Marcio and Polonius are also in Vienna. Claudius asks why Marcio is staying with him, to which Marcio replies that he is protecting Regina because she is the next in line to the throne. When Marcio asks why he is staying, Claudius responds that he wants to protect Regina against the consequences of her marriage to Polonius. He also says that he would like to make Regina the next queen if she marries him. Regina, however, is not interested in this plan. She is angry that she was not recognized in the maid's house, and wonders why she did not have the maids to comfort her.
