This chapter's epigraph comes from a line in the novel The Secret of Eden. It's a quote from the novel's protagonist, Eden, in which he says, "I am not afraid of the future, but I am afraid of what it will be like to be lost in the future." He's referring to the fact that the future will be different from the present because it's going to be a time of darkness, not light. In other words, the future isn't going to look anything like the present.
