This chapter opens with a flashback to the beginning of the previous chapter. In this scene, we are introduced to Dr. Bledsoe, who is now a member of the Volscian army. He has just returned from a battle in which he was severely wounded. He is now in the process of healing himself when he hears Pamila's voice, which reminds him of his own healing powers. Pamila tells him that he is about to be killed, and he is grateful for the opportunity to practice his healing powers before the battle.
