About This Chapter
In this chapter, the narrator reflects on the events of the previous chapter. He feels that he has survived the worst, and that he is now very happy. He wishes that he had been able to enjoy life and be thankful when he was on the brink of death, so that he would be able to appreciate it and be grateful for it. He thinks that this scene is a fairy tale, and he wishes that the soldiers had not slapped him so ferociously. He also thinks that they have spent two weeks on the mountain and the river, and now they are finally at home. He wants to change into his enemy's clothes, but he knows that he will be killed if he does so. He tells the soldiers to stop and talk to him, but they refuse to listen to him. The soldiers tell him that they are from the enemy army, and they demand that he be arrested immediately. The narrator tells them that he does not know them at all, but that they can testify against him. He asks the soldiers why they have to speak to the captain, and the soldiers say that they do not know him at all
