In this chapter, we hear the story of Mina's relationship with Seigo. Mina explains that her husband, a professor of medicine, died recently, and she and Seigo broke up. Seigo, however, was kind enough to tell Mina that he and her husband had broken up, even though he and Mina had been lovers for 10 years. Mina says that she was desperate to be close to Seigo at the time, and so she begged him to tutor her son. When she met Seigo's father, he was "so gloomy and arrogant," and she was always "sharp and angry." She wonders if this is what Seigo told her, and wonders if she could have saved him by using "any method possible."
