Six years later, the narrator graduates from college and finds a job in Washington, D. C., where he lives with his fiance, tuoyi, who is studying for his Ph.D. The couple moves to Baltimore, where they live in a small apartment. The narrator asks qiuqiu what she is looking at, and she tells him that she has already washed up, and that jiujiu is trying to seduce her again. She says that she doesn't care what people think of her, because she wants to be with her fiance forever. She wants his body to be white as ivory and his mind to be as beautiful as a merman. She tells qiu that she wants his ring to be put on, but she also wants him to get crazy because of her. They have been living together for a year, and they haven't sent the ring yet. They go for a walk after dinner, and the narrator becomes a coward. He says that he wants to wait until they go back to their hometown after graduating, but he feels like there's no one who can help him hold it back now. He tells her that he has the right to choose her choice, even if they fall in love again, because after living together there must be some thing that they have to change in order to be fit together. He asks her if she will marry him and she says yes, and he tells her to stand up, because he knows that she is silly.
