About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that she was born a peasant girl. Her father died early, and her mother had to work in the town to make a living. The narrator has a dream that she can go to the middle school and study to make money so that her mother and her big brother can live in a huge house. She says that the girl has never had a chance to play with her family because she has never studied with them. She thinks that it is pointless to make friends, gain knowledge, and get awarded for it. She feels like she and the girl have been roommates for a while, but they haven't spoken much yet. On her birthday, the narrator invites the girl to come to her house and play. She tells the girl that she has a room in her house that burns wood for cooking and that the house is bigger than she imagines it to be. The girl says that this is her first time that she told others about it, and it feels awesome. At this moment, she realizes that she is in love with the girl and that she brought her from the village to the top school. She also says that they have become best friends, and that they sing, walk, and tease each other every day.
