Land of the Lustrous

In this chapter, we learn that the only thing that can be done to resurrect the creatures is to destroy them. The only way to do this is to collect their shells. They eat sand and recrystallize it inside their bodies. The problem is that they have a wide variety of shapes and sizes, which makes it easy for new creatures to evolve. If they were to attempt to re-create the creatures, they would have to kill off all of them. This would mean that they would never be able to recover the creatures again. This is a big bummer, because they've been acknowledged by the creatures as royalty, and they love them. But if they don't, then they'll have to take them apart and destroy them forever.
