The next morning, the men are still looking for the sea king's clack, which was left in the middle of their room. They're worried about what to do now that they're back together, and they don't know who left the clack there. They wonder who gave it to them, and if they'll be able to get back together if something happens to one of them. The only thing that can be done is to replace the lost body parts with materials of similar quality. The exterior of the spines are more fragile than the rest of the men's, but the inside contains agate, a type of quartz that's seven times harder than the other types of quartz. The men are worried that they won't have enough material to make two legs, so they decide to take a walk.
