The chapter opens with a description of the plot to assassinate yokose. The assassin hired by the Chinese gang is a woman named Fe, who has a long-standing personal enmity for the dead man. She has been collecting money for him ever since his death, making it seem as though he is alive. She lives in a dark room with no light and no air. The chapter ends with a soliloquy in which the narrator laments the fact that he has not been able to find anything of value in the raid on the home of Fe. He wonders why she has led such a frugal life and why she raised her son in an orphan's age.
