The chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which Jarndyce and his men fled the scene of the murder of a police officer. The flashback reveals that the police officer was killed in the line of duty, and that his men have fled. The police chief is in the midst of gathering information about the whereabouts of the fleeing officers when he hears the sound of a car approaching. He is immediately alarmed, and sends his men to find out the location of the two fleeing officers. The men find them in a rest stop on the highway, but they have not yet reached the town where they were supposed to be. The chief is shocked to learn that they have gone to a nearby rest stop, and he is even more shocked when he learns that they are in a car with a plate number of 4189, which is the same car that was found in the abandoned car of the murdered officer
