The narrator is on his way to a subway station in New York City when he runs into Mr. Roberts. The two of them decide to meet up at the station and have a bite to eat. The narrator says he'll hang out first and then look for Roberts. He's waiting for the train to come, but he doesn't see Roberts yet. The train is coming, but the signal isn't good at the subway station. So the two decide to hang out and wait until the train comes. The subway station is noisy, and the signal is bad. So they hang out for a bit, and then the narrator asks Roberts where he is. He asks where he's been, and Roberts says he is in front of a staircase. He says the train is on its way, and they can see each other once the train arrives. He even sent a message to Roberts asking him to wait for him. So, the two hang out, and when they finally get to the train, they realize that they're the only ones left on the train platform, looking "like a fool" .
