About This Chapter
In this short scene, a young man named jay , who works as a quality checker at a cafe, is talking to his friend, Sam. The two of them are discussing the weather, which is getting hotter and hotter, and the fact that it's been a while since they've seen each other. They're both thinking about how much Sam has changed since they last saw each other, and how much he's changed since then. The young man asks Sam if he thinks that he has been making up his own image of Sam all this time, and Sam says that he hasn't been thinking about it all that much. He's just been sitting by the window all day, like an "abandoned dog" , and he doesn't want to be left alone with his friend. He tells the young man that he was being selfish when he confessed his love for Sam, and that he told Sam to get away from her, but he didn't do anything about it. He says that Sam is just coming on to him to keep him in his life, and this is what he means by "liking" him. He asks if the cafe is open today, and when Sam says yes, he says that the food is ready, and then he asks if he should go home to get some rest. When he gets home, he looks around and sees that he looks like he might have done something wrong the night before, but that it was nothing like what happened that night. He wonders if Sam is still "just your friend," and when he hears that, he asks whether he'd been "just the what" . If he likes someone, he spends time with them, and if he treats him "like a kid again," he calls him his "friend." He says he wants a "defined relationship"
