Mermaid's Egg

In this chapter, the village chief explains to the audience how he came to be a village chief. He tells the audience that when he was a young man, he tried to become village chief because he wanted his wife to have a congenital condition so that she could get better care. When he became village chief, however, he realized that he had to sacrifice his wife for the tribe.
