The narrator wakes up in the middle of the night. He can't remember what he was thinking the night before, but he's sure it was a dream. He's not sure how to respond to the question, "What should I say when I see feng later" . The narrator asks him what's going on. He tells him that the census bureau is going to visit the shop in the next couple of days. He doesn't want to live in the shop for the time being, because the bureau will be looking at his backs. He also tells the narrator that the bureau is looking at the barber shops as well. He asks if they're looking for him, and the narrator says that he is looking for "dark circles under his eyes" , which is a reference to the dark circles that feng's eyes seem to have under his eyelids. He then asks where the fancy shirt that the client gave him was, and he says he forgot to bring it with him to the hospital. He says he likes the shirt because it's brand new and he can keep it for as long as he likes. The conversation turns to the fact that the two of them are moving to the dorms, which the narrator thinks is a bad idea. The two men try to talk each other out of their feelings.
