The police officer says that he will never be able to see again because of the damage he has done to his vision. He says he will have to work extra hours tomorrow to make up for the lost time. He tells the officer to "maintain a positive attitude" and to "take good care of" his eyes if they are not going to get worse. The officer says he has "cataracts" , which means he is blind in one eye and has trouble seeing in the other. He plans to tell his boss and take a two-week leave of absence to get his eyes checked out. He admits that he said those words to comfort his wife, not to comfort himself.
