The narrator explains that the royal family has a secret document that stipulates that a descendant of a royal family inherit the secret document and marry the heir to the throne. This means that the narrator and his bride-to-be are destined to be married. The royal family, says the narrator, has an obligation to honor the document, and he explains that he cannot marry his bride because she is the daughter of a relative who died before he could inherit the document. He says that he will stay in the house until he learns what happened to his father.
