About This Chapter
In this short scene, the young goldie learns that his boss is holding a competition to find a new escort to replace the one at the old house. The competition is to be held in front of a woman examiner, and the goldie asks why the examiner is a woman. The examiner replies that she is strong enough to handle all of the applicants. The goldie tells the examiner that he is afraid that he will not be able to make it through the first round of the competition. He offers him five coins to use to buy himself a cup of porridge from the next-door shop to soothe his throat. The woman is so terrified that she tells him to pick up the money and return it to her. He says that he does not want the money because he has been injured and has damaged his body permanently. She tells him that the three men who have passed the competition have to take their clothes off for the competition, and she asks him why they had to do so. He replies that he should not have said yes to the job when he said he wanted to come, but he is only there to look over the woman as her brother
