About This Chapter
The owner of a stall selling congee, a sweet pastry dish, announces that he has sold out of his red bean pastries. He promises to have another bowl of congee and two rolls of silver thread rolls for his esteemed guest. He tells the guest that the congee is a "sweet syrup" and that he cannot give it to her because he has a secret recipe for it. If she wants to try it, she can ask her mom to bring her to the stall. The congee stall owner declares that his congee business will thrive as a result of the success of his stall. He invites the guest to have a look at the stalls next to him. He introduces himself as the owner of the stall and says that the madam of his family is getting older and her appetite is getting worse. He says that he brought her some food and they have prepared a side dish and a new dish for her. He asks her if she likes it and she says that she does. He then asks her to try some more of the food from the stall next door. She says that it is a yam-and-meat congee that she likes very much. She asks if she can have some too and he promises to buy some for her every day.
