In chapter 41, Hiroko and Ksei discuss the snow that has fallen in the past few days. Hiroko has been moved to an intensive care unit because of his mother's illness. He tells his mother that he will not be able to play the piano in the upcoming East Japan piano competition because of the illness, and he will have to undergo an operation on the following day.
