About This Chapter
In this chapter, Tommo explains that he had planned to win the World Cup and cause an outbreak of the dreaded "Wakorin fever" . He had also planned to leave his heart in Japan and make his way to England, where he hoped to be a "super star" and "cause an unprecedented outbreak" of the disease. Now, however, he realizes that his plan has been "thrown off course" and that his chance to be "a super star" has been lost. He tells Tommo that he is not him, and that he tickles Tommo's "motherly instincts." He asks if he can hear the music again, and Tommo replies that he cannot because the sound is too rough. He says that the music is too fast and that it sounds violent, like Tommo is hurling his fingers "at the keys." Tommo says that this is not the music he was supposed to play, and he wonders if this is the same music he heard when he was playing for the kaochan. He also says that he once looked up at Tommo and said, "I been dongi / The last two years / The same mis take." He then asks Tommo if he wants to play the same piece again.
