In this chapter, Huck and Huck's friend shu recalls their time together on the Mississippi River. Huck tells the story of how Huck and shu ended up on the river, and Huck wonders why Huck didn't tell shu about their adventures earlier. Huck says that shu is a great charmer, and that he hopes to make a tea party out of the story tonight. Huck asks if shu will look at him and laugh at his jokes about her, but shu won't listen to him. Huck tries to laugh at himself for making fun of his feelings, but he can't stop himself. Huck wonders if the story with the river and the ostrich ended on a "weird note" .
