About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which the narrator explains that he is now in grade school and that he has lost all sense of time and space. He has lost his ability to distinguish between people and things, and he is afraid that the future will not be as bright as he had hoped. He is also afraid that he will be killed in the battle. He asks the reader to imagine what it must be like to be a child in a war-torn country, and to imagine that it is impossible for him to escape. The narrator tells the reader that he does not know what it is like to live in a country where there are no roads, no schools, no hospitals, and no doctors. He also tells the story of his father, who died when he was a child, and his mother, who was pregnant with him, and who died of a broken heart. The chapter ends with the narrator asking the reader what it was like to fight in the war.
