About This Chapter
In this chapter, we learn that Dr. Manette's plan is to have a "special combo" that will allow her to live a long and happy life. She's also going to be able to "become that person" , which means that she's going to have to work for the other men in the facility. She tells us that the poet has been using this facility to control people, and that he was able to do this when he first came to it. Apparently, the poet used his palm to touch people's heads, and when he was restrained by the male staff, he was back to his old self within two days. This is bad enough, but it's even worse when you consider the fact that he's using his palm as a way to control other people. He's supposed to be using it as a tool to control the people around him, and he can't figure out how to get away with it. He says he'll take the brass and hang out with the men. The rain stops, and the thud sounds like "congratulation" . He tells himself that he can already see himself getting found out. He wants to be a "woman," but he can no longer wear the gorgeous clothes he once wore. He feels like someone shot him, or someone cut his nails, or something. He doesn't know what to say, but he wants to know what's wrong with him. He asks what he is a "covenant," and he says that he feels like a "body brimming with power," and that someone has shot him.
