About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter, in which we learn that the Hirohito family has been searching for the missing taisuke. The narrator tells us that the family is very concerned about the whereabouts of the missing man, and that they have been trying to find him since the beginning of the war. He also tells the audience that he has taken pictures of the inside of the U.S. Air Force Base, which he believes to be the home of the enemy. He says that he feels the pulse of the heart of a man on the island, and the sound of a gunshot echoes through the air. He is certain that the sound is coming from the white building at the top of the island. He believes that it is the voice of Captain Hawdon, and he is sure that the voice belongs to him. He tells the others that he cannot find anyone to keep an eye on him, because Hawdon is the only one who knows where the missing woman is, and she must have been somewhere she could see Hawdon's house. The chapter ends with the narrator telling us that he received a message from Yonhap that nami Kusu has been "taken care of" and that everyone is waiting to see her. He asks Yonhap if he would like to see nami, and Yonhap tells him that he will not be able to do so, since it is his job to assess whether or not nami is safe.
