The next morning, the Governess wakes up to find that her husband is asleep. He's drunk, and she's smelled his cologne for the first time in her life. The Governess tells her husband that she likes him, and that she'd like to be able to live with him if she were out and not worrying about him. She also tells him that he's got a lot of shopping to do, so he can do whatever he wants. He tells her that he tried to get her to write something on the board, but she couldn't get it out. She says that she has always managed to escape from situations like this.
