The chapter opens with a soliloquy by satou. He tells us that he had mixed feelings when he heard the story of marron. He wanted to fill a hole in her heart, but he also wanted to be able to squeeze the "replace ment" for a dog. He thinks that if he slept with her, even if she hated it, she would see him as a man. He feels that this is unfair of him. He also feels that he made her play along with the whole "trial" thing. He says that he thought he could just make her love him, but when he's near her, he can't be sure. He uses the excuse of "a trial dating period" so that before she could sort out her type, he could sleep with her and make her mine. The chapter ends with a "step slam tremble" . It's been three months since they began their relationship, and now they've only been together for three months. The narrator says that she left everything to chiaki, and that he was just a replacement for marron . He was always kind and fun when they were together, and he was the one who fell in love with marron, not her. She's so sad that she can never find a time when she needs it the most.
