About This Chapter
It's been a while since we've heard from Little Em'ly, but now she's back. She's selling lanterns, and she tells the girl that she'll be taking her to a party. She tells her that the lanterns are hand painted, water resistant, and fireproof, and the painting on the lantern is one of a kind. The girl can get them for less than a tael . Uncle Rouncewell is all, "You can do whatever you want with it" . He's not buying it for the sick children, he's just trying to make a buck off of the girl. He calls her an orphan brat, and curses her for committing bad deeds in her life. He says that if she continues like this, her luck will be "rotten" if she keeps doing this. He tells her to stop cursing him, and to bring water to help him. He asks her if she made the fire right, and if she did it right, she says yes. She says that she wanted to comfort him, but in the end, she made him cry. This time, she was comforted. She thanks him for giving her a gift, and says that it's the first time she ever gave a gift to a friend.
