About This Chapter
In this brief scene, we learn that the lantern is made of human skin, and that it's the same color as the skin on the body of the dead. This is the first time we've ever seen skin like this, and it turns out that this is the reason why the lantern was made. The narrator tells us that he's an expert on the dead, so he knows what to do with the lantern. He tells the audience that he won't tell the emperor about what happened, but he'll tell him right away. He also says that the bathing water in the palace is running, which is a luxury, since the emperor is only there to complete his mission. He's not there to do anything for the rest of the people, he just needs to remember what happened. He says that he will do what he thinks is meaningful in the future. He wants to know what the future holds for him, and he asks if you'd like to take a bath as well. He doesn't want to hurt you, he says, because he has a "trauma of water" , which means he has to shower with sand instead of water for a year. He explains that he and the narrator haven't had a bath in a year
