About This Chapter
Seong-nam wakes up in the middle of nowhere. He's been tied up by Lee Seung-wan. He can't even see where he's going, so he coughs and starts to breathe heavily. He realizes that the smell of oils and dry soil is coming from the place where he was tied up, and he wonders why he didn't run away when he first saw the man. Seung-nam explains that his father used to run a trading business, but that he was a "nobleman doing business" , not a "trader" . The business was small, to be sure, but he managed to get a lot of "luck" out of it. He had no power but he had lots of money. The "japanese legally" took over his father's property and stabbed him with a bayonet . Everyone except Seung, except his father, except for his wife, his children, and his wife's children. Seong says that his story is a "common story" and that the popular writer is also a part of the story. He asks Seung to tell him about his old story, but Seung doesn't want to hear it, because he thinks it's a common story, too. He tells Seung that he'll have to kill him first, then kill his wife and daughter, and then kill the prosecutor, who's coming to save him. He says that he can think of no better way to kill the man than by killing him first.
