In this chapter, we're introduced to the chief of the clan that's been butchering and working with the bodies of dragons for thousands of years, and we learn that he's a "withered old man" . We're also introduced to a young woman named Vanabelle, who's just returned from a trip to a nearby town, and who we learn is a "young lady" at this point. We learn that Vanabelle has been living in the town for a month, and that she's now married to an old man named Lape. Lape tells us that Lape is the chief, and Lape explains that he and his clan have been "cherishing dragons" since ancient times. He also tells us about the custom of making tapestries out of dragon leather, which is tanned to look like a different dragon's skin color. He explains that the first dragon he helped butcher was so massive that they had to hire people from another town to help them butcher it, which took a week to complete. He says that he feels like he could stare at the tapestry "ever" , and asks if she'd like to sew it together. She says yes, and then asks Lape to teach her how to thread a needle between her legs.
