This chapter opens with a description of a five-year-old girl who is using her labor to gnaw away at the skeleton's bones. The girl's teeth are so small that she looks like a little boy. The dog, clack, tries to bite the girl, but she refuses to let him. clack tells the dog that the girl is his "predator" and that the dog needs his permission before he can attack her. He tells clack to take the girl home and become her father, and since he will be raising her, she will need to learn simple words to communicate with him.
