About This Chapter
The next morning, Zhang tells the group that they have captured the villager who snuck into the ancestral hall the night before. He tells the men that they should not have entered the hall, as it is the place where they worship, offer sacrifices, and care for their family matters. He also tells the story of a small village that worshipped the mountain god inside a deep well. The villagers would bring sacrifices to the well every five years in order to pray for a bountiful harvest. The selfish villagers would then kidnap two children from outside of the village each year. One day, the villagers encountered a mother and her son fleeing from war.
