In this chapter, Fangzheng tries to find out if there is any news about the Tongjiang bridge. He finds out that there is no news because the river is closed off. Fangzheng asks his grandfather if he can come pick him up. He tells his grandfather that he is with Linjiabao and two college girls. They are afraid to go back home because of the rumors that have spread about the incident at the bridge. They ask him to come pick them up so they can go back to their homes. He asks them to send him their location so he can find out what has caused them to be so frightened. They tell him that they are afraid of the ghost of the dead man who was walking on the bridge and of the dog who was digging up graves. They also tell him about the ghostly men who are asking for directions to graves hill. He is amazed at the number of things that can happen when he encounters a ghost. He knows that if he does not answer the ghost's question or extinguish his own flame, the ghosts can do nothing to him
