The next morning, the three of them go for a walk, and the narrator tells the story of how he was able to memorize the three books in one day. He says that he'll be able to do the same for his friend, and that they'll go out and do their best to forget all the people around them. He gives a gift to his friend: a necklace that he picked out for him as a "return gift" for the jade that he gave him. The necklace must have cost a lot of money, he says, because he bought it at an auction, and he can't sell it to anyone else. He also tells him that the peach tree in his garden has been damaged by insects, causing losses to farmers. He tells his friend that he went to heaven a few days ago, where he became more aware of the universe. He hopes that as long as he continues to cultivate, he can go to a "wider world" .
