The chapter opens with a conversation between yanran and Zhang Yufan. Zhang, who has just arrived at the fort, is furious that his son has arrived without him. He wants to know what has happened to the marriage contract, but Zhang tells him to forget about it. The two men discuss the handsome young waiter, who is not wearing a uniform, and the pretentious young man who is looking down on others. The young waiter tells Zhang that the young man is going out for a "woman he fancies" and that he would have taken the money if it were him. The waiter tells him that he has come out on business with Zhang on account of his grandmother, who helped him when he first started his business. He says that Zhang is just a poor, uncultured man who has no idea what is good for him. When the young waiter asks if he has allowed Zhang to point at him, the waiter replies that he did not allow him to do so. He then tells the waiter that someone has just called for 500 men to beat him up in the restaurant.
