About This Chapter
The scene opens with a young man named Lan, who has come to tell the lady that he is a student of the martial arts master, Fan Ming-liang. Lan tells the young man that his master has forbidden him to teach the art of taoism to anyone. The young man, however, wants to learn the art from his uncle, who is also a martial artist. Lan asks the man if he has any money, and the man says that he does not have any, but that he has invited the man to come and show his gratitude. The man tells Lan that his martial arts practice has been going on for five years, and that his physical fitness is better than any other martial artist in the area. Lan says that the man has been practicing magic since he was five years old, but the man still does not believe him. He says that if the man wins the fight, he will get all the money, but if he loses, the man will get only one million. He tells the man that he will not use magic, and he will show the man what he can do if he wins. Lan is amazed at the man's ability to fight with his hand, and wonders how he could take such a blow. Lan apologizes, saying that he lost a million on his account, but he has earned more than that in the past day. The two men go to eat, and Lan asks to borrow a bottle of wine to drink with them.
