When the marquis enters the house, the Governess is horrified to see him cooking. She is sure that he is not an amateur, but she is also worried that he has been taught to cook by someone else. The Governess, however, is not jealous of the young woman, but rather, she is worried about her grandmother, who was a cook when she was a child. She has just recovered from an illness and is not worried about the food she is preparing. She explains that she used to be a cook for the Mingus, but her grandmother was ill, so even though the food was good, she could not taste it. This morning, after she woke up, she felt like her soul had left her body. She wants to go outside and tell her grandmother the truth, but first she has to go back to her room and change clothes.
