The chapter opens with a soliloquy by Caius Mingus, in which he explains that he was not looking for an indenture. He was looking for the master's servants. He says that he had expected to find a bunch of them, but now that he has no one to guard him, he is forced to look around for them. He feels that he would be stupid if he were unable to steal the master. He curses his father for not telling him sooner, and he threatens to beat him to death if he does not leave. Caius tells him that it is not his place to discuss Caius's business, and that he should stop talking about it. He tells Caius to wipe off the blood that has changed his complexion, and Caius says that this is not the time for him to talk about Caius. He asks Caius if he wants to die, and then Caius asks him to stop talking, saying that he wants only to see the young master walk out of the room sober. The scene ends with Cai
