The chapter opens with a conversation between a young man and an older man. The young man tells the older man that he is a disciple of a school called the Ma-Yi School. The older man informs him that he has an appointment to see an elder of the school, and the young man asks him what his business is. The elder replies that he wants to see the man who will help him become a recognized "Enforcer of the Thirteen Mysteries" . The old man says that he will write the letter first, and then he will go to the "Dark Isle" to learn the secrets of the book. The man tells him that the time is not yet right, and that he cannot tell him everything he needs to know. He tells the old man that the book has not yet been used, and he will have to wait until the time has come to use it. He then tells the elder that he can leave for the dark island, but he will not tell him anything yet. He says that the man must undergo a "test from the dark Isle" before he can be recognized as an enforcer of the "Thirteen Mysteries." The elder tells the man that this is not too late, but that he must first go to "Beijing" , where he will learn all of the secrets. The younger man asks the elder what business he has with him. He informs the elder of a letter from a master named "White Crane." The master says that "we have an ancient rule" in the school of taoism, which states that you can't return on a promise.
