In this chapter, we learn that the contract between the devil and the holder of the key to the kingdom of heaven has passed the first test. The contract holder is safe now, but the devil is still out there. He asks the boy where his father is, and the boy tells him that he is sorry for his loss. He tells the boy that he wants to get out of the way if the devil comes back, but that he cannot stop him. The boy says that he has thought about it a long time, and that he doesn't have enough strength to fight off the enemy. He decides to hand over the key that the devil has been using to get from the national security to the king of heaven. He wants the key so that he can use it against the devil if he should come back. He says that the key is not safe enough for him to leave it in his possession, and he would be better off if the key were with him. He wonders how he came up with this idea, and wonders why the devil couldn't just find the key when he could just come and find it. The devil says that it is impossible that he could have killed 99 people. The holder has more authority than the devil to kill the devil with the key.
