The chapter opens with a flashback to a conversation between the Governess and the captain of the ship. The Governess tells the captain that she wants to know why the captain has a life-and-death sentence. The captain tells her that it is because of a search record. She asks the captain to tell her the reason for the sentence, but the captain refuses. She tells him that the search record indicates that the captain is in danger of being killed. The Captain tells her to go to the police station and find out what has happened. He will tell her what he knows about the search records. She will then be able to tell him what he should do about it.
