The narrator tells us that he's 7 years old and that his birthday present is to stay at home and draw. He asks his dad if he'd like to meet the world of his dad, who abandoned everything. The narrator says that he was a little angry at first, but thanks to a "grain of sand" he was able to see that his dad's "world" was very different from the one he grew up in. He says that his eyes were filled with "large colorful pieces" of art, and that everything was "strange" . He thinks that this is what his dad was like.
