In this chapter, we are introduced to Lin Ling, a student at Renmin School in Shanghai, and we are told that he is very brave in his confession of his love for Luhao. He tells us that he only sees Luhao as a fellow student, and that he does not like him because he is afraid that he will lose face at the rate he is showing himself to be a lover. Lin Ling is very upset by this news, and he tells her that it is her fault for revealing that she is in love with Luhao, and she should not hold it against her. He then tells her to stop crying, because she is driving him crazy.
