The next morning, the surviving humans prepare for the coming winter by gathering as much food as possible and freezing it in the hope that they will have enough food to survive the coming cold and snow. When the weather warms, the men go to the cave to find food. When they arrive, they find that the deer they killed earlier in the day is too large for them to eat. They are worried that they have been infected with a strange disease, but the man assures them that he will not be infected. He tells them that they are his only relative in the world and hopes that mankind will one day be able to help them survive. He prepares a birthday feast for his son and tells him that he is his only hope of survival
