In this chapter, we are introduced to a young girl named yue, who is afraid of dolls. Her parents have told her that dolls have "no souls" and that they will "rob people of their souls" . When yue sees a doll, her parents tell her not to touch it or else it will rob her of her soul . Worried about her daughter's safety, jing gives her the doll and tells her to give it to her. She tells yue that if she does not touch the doll, then she will not play with dolls. jing tells her that she will bring the doll back for her. Confused and angry, she tells jing that she threw away her friend's doll and that yue now has the doll. She asks jing to burn the doll so that she can save yue.
