The main character wonders if this is a "fairy-tale" or a "dry well," and wonders why tian has been expelled from school. He asks tian if he'd like some more food, and tian says he'll send him back to school just like he wanted. Worried that the well is "human-eating," tian asks if he can test it out, but tian assures him that it'll be fine once he tests it out. He tells tian that since everyone calls him "scum," he's going to be one of them, and he promises to send tian back home just like tian wanted. He gives tian 10,000 yuan, which he found in tian's bedside table the day before. He wants to talk to tian, and tells him that he can ask him for money if he wants it. He says that he killed his mother accidentally four days ago, and that's why he still feeds her to the well. He orders tian to go in and find out what's been going on in the basement, where all the bodies of people who've disappeared are piled up.
