This chapter opens with a flashback to the previous chapter, in which Caius learns that he is pregnant. Caius explains that he had planned to have a miscarriage with a wet nurse, but that the wet nurse had already informed him that he was pregnant. When Caius asks his mother why she is so upset, she tells him that she had thought Caius was pregnant with another woman's child, and that Caius's mother had protected her sister. The flashback ends with Caius telling his mother that the woman who had protected his sister had also been pregnant.
